Winning a BKFC World Championship is a life-changing experience for most fighters – but not David “Redneck” Mundell.
“Same (expletive), different day,” Mundell says with a chuckle when asked how his life has changed since he beat Francesco Ricchi for the BKFC World Middleweight Championship in December.
It’s not that Mundell isn’t proud of his accomplishments in the Squared Circle; he’s just not surprised.
“I feel like I hold myself to a very high standard,” he offers. “I don’t slack off because I don’t want there to be any doubt in my mind. As long as I do everything I’m supposed to do, I believe 100-percent that I will walk away with the W.”
Mundell is preparing for his first title defense against No. 1 contender Mike “The Marine” Richman in the Main Event of BKFC 47 on July 14 in Lakeland, FL, LIVE on The BKFC App.
There’s a cliche in the fight game that a title holder isn’t truly a champion until they defend their belt at least once. There’s some truth to that, according to Mundell, and he’s eager to cement his status as the top dog in the stacked BKFC middleweight division this summer.
“Sometimes you’ll see a fighter get a bit lucky to get a belt, then they fight somebody who’s more deserving of it and they get smashed,” he says. “Mike is the No. 1 contender in the division and beating him proves everything. After him, there’s nobody in the way – it’s a wide open field.”
